At Philip’s Academy Charter School of Paterson, we believe athletics are an essential extension of the classroom. Student-athletes are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their participation, growth, and communication throughout the sports season.

All practice schedules, game calendars, forms, and other important materials will be shared through the student-athlete to foster leadership, accountability, and independence. We encourage students to approach their coach at appropriate times with any questions or concerns related to their sport or athletic experience.

To ensure open and respectful communication, we have outlined a recommended process for addressing questions or concerns:

Communication Process

  1. Student-athlete and Coach Meeting

    • The student should first request a meeting with their coach to discuss the issue.

    • Meetings should be scheduled before or after practice — not during class periods or immediately after games.

  2. Parent, Student-Athlete, and Coach Meeting

    • If the concern is not resolved, a follow-up meeting may be arranged with the student, parent/guardian, and coach during the coach’s working hours.

  3. Escalation to School Administration

    • If further support is needed, a meeting may be requested with the school's Athletics Coordinator or Administrator.

    • The next level of escalation would involve the Building Principal.

    • Final concerns may be directed to the Head of School or Superintendent, if necessary.

Important Note: Coaches and administrators will not discuss playing time or in-game coaching strategies, as these are professional decisions that involve multiple student-athletes and are at the coach’s discretion.

24-Hour Rule

To ensure productive and respectful conversations, we encourage parents and guardians to wait at least 24 hours after a game before reaching out to a coach or requesting a meeting. Emotions can run high after competitions, and time allows for perspective and thoughtful dialogue.

Game Day Protocol

Coaches are not available for meetings immediately before or after games or practices, nor during athletic events or conferences. Please schedule all discussions in advance via email or written request.
